Arjuna is Abhimanyu’s father based from the epic poem Mahabharata that was shared in Chapter 15. He was a great warrior and archer. As a tradition. He was sent to the woods to learn from another warrior who is also a philosopher, teacher and an accomplished scholar Dronacharya. One day he decided to test his royal students and he painted a wooden fish which he placed on a pole that is installed on a shallow pool of water. He told his students that he wanted them to look down at the reflection of the fish in the water and shoot the eye of the fish on the pole. First student said that he saw the ground, the water, the pole, and the fish. Dronacharya told him he was not ready and asked him to sit down. All the students said the same and he said they are not ready until Arjuna stood up and said he could only see the center of the eye of the fish. Dronacharya asked him to fire the arrow and his arrow hit the fish right in the center of its eye. The guru told the students that they failed the pretest because archery is all about singularly focused on the target.
To summarize this chapter in one word, Focus would be the right one. There are hundred thousands publicly traded companies, hundred thousands privately held businesess around the world that can be bought and add to this fixed-income securities, currencies, commodities, real estate, put and call options, mutual funds, hedge funds, treasuries and more. The Dhandho investor only invests in simple, well understood businesses. That requirement alone likely eliminates 99 percent of possible investment alternatives. Focus on your core competence like Arjuna. Do all the readings on strengthening your core.
Do not make the fatal mistake of looking at five businesses at once. Learn all you can about the business that jumps out for whatever reason and fixate solely on it. Once you’re at the finish line with your analysis, only then look at the broader circle of competence. If you need a goal, focus on maximixing your wealth using the Dhandho technique and give it away. As Mohnish’s father said, we came to this earth naked and we will leave naked as well. Fill in the blank wisely. Leave this world a better place for others. Mohnish is walking his talk with his Dakshana Foundation. I would recommend you to have a look at it and craft your own foundation plan. Build your wealth and channel it to your foundation or an existing one out there. True happiness lies in giving.
